Indulge in the Uniquely Singapore experience

Posted on October 3, 2009October 3, 2009 by Jolene

If I do go for this Singapore trip, I’ll be able to check out places as a total tourist!! I go Singapore often enough and although Chee Kiang and I do think about checking out the super touristy places, we never get around to doing it. So this seems like a good opportunity to do it!

I’ve always enjoyed myself so much whenever I go down to visit Chee Kiang. 🙂 In fact, I had a great time looking at the pictures I took from 2006 till now. 🙂 *warm*

So here’s a stroll through my photo album of some of my most favourite things to do and see in Singapore.

Places to see:

Taken in Aug 2006, right after my Year 1 finals.
I know this photo damn drama but this is Orchard Road! Always worth the stroll to make you strive to be more hardworking so you can earn more money and maybe afford a top from one of the shops there. Maybe.

I’m not too familiar with the Singapore night life as the only time I went clubbing in Singapore was that time in 2006 at MOS which has since closed down. Sigh. But if you’re into all that, Clarke Quay has a rather good variety of bars. 🙂 It’s damn romantic too with the river running by.

If I were to ever work in Singapore (I didn’t say I would ah, dear;P) I would love to have my dental office (or work for a dental office) that faces the Singapore river. It’s so gorgeous and peaceful. This picture was taken when I took the boat ride and it really shows you the old and the new Singapore. 🙂 Love the skyscrapers.

What trip to Singapore would be complete without doing silly stuff with the Merlion?

Taken in December 2006.

Like any other big cities, Singapore never disappoints during Christmas! Some big multi billion dollar company will take on the task and transform the streets of Singapore into Christmas land!

After Far East Plaza (on Orchard Road), Vivo is my most favourite place to shop at! I mean some of the shops can be found here in Malaysia but the things there are like a whole season ahead of us. And I’m talking about the toy shop that I always frequent – ActionCity! That’s where I discovered the Hannari Tofu!

There’s a place I absolutely adore – Sheer Romance! Bikinis of all kinds of prints are available there. There’s a few outlets but the only ones I know of is the one in Far East Plaza and Vivo City! And for shoes right…. FAR EAST PLAZA!!  OMG. *froths at mouth* The last time I was in Singapore, I bought three pairs and it only came up to SGD60!!

Taken in May 2008, right before my Year 3 finals.

I’m not sure if the DHL balloon is still there, but if it is, GO FOR IT!! It’s your only chance to go up a hot air balloon if you’re not planning to venture out of South East Asia anytime soon!

The view!

Chinatown! The whole Singapore is already chinese itself, somemore need a china town. I’d like to check out Little India though..wanna go see how much do the Swarovski crystals there cost.

Of course, Chinatown is an awesome place to get cheongsams. There’s a really nice one there..but I can’t remember the shop’s name now. -_-

Gotta love it when the city casts a gorgeous glow on the river.

Do check out the Esplanade for your artsy fartsy fix. Plenty of artistes showcase their work there.

This is Chijmes. It used to be a convent girls school which was transformed into one of the more high end places to dine at. We were tricked into eating there by a few friends. *frowns at Abby* We had japanese which was not bad! Many other restaurants there, didn’t have the time and money to check out everything! Maybe next time:)

East Coast Park – seriously a recreational park! Every weekend, families actually come out to rent bicycles and cycle the entire stretch, uncles go fishing here, kids rollerblade, angmoh kids skateboard, college students throw bbq parties at one of the chalets and as I have recently discovered, there’s even water skiing available at a freaking pond. Don’t get me wrong, it faces the sea, but they waterski in a pond with a contraption above that swings them round and round the pond.

I think it’s about SGD6 to rent a bicycle for a couple of hours.

Chee Kiang brought me to the end of the world.. damn tiring.

The water looks really nice right? But people hardly swim there.

Fort Canning Park is where you’ll probably go if you have a concert to catch! I was there for Lady Gaga’s concert and yes….I’ve not blogged about it yet.

NOW, about places to eat:

Taken in Aug 2006.

This is Cafe Cartel.

IT HAS SERIOUSLY AWESOME PORK RIBS!

Taken in Aug 2007.

And who can forget the awesome Siu Lung Paus from Din Tai Fung? Mmmm.

When I met up with Jed and Erin for some really good Siu Lung Paus.

Another special Singapore delicacy that you have to try is the bread with ice-cream kiapped in between. A bit of a challenge to eat it, but it’s really really nice! It’s available all over Orchard Road!

Taken in May 2008.

Back at Clarke Quay, there’s this bar that you would have to try just for the novelty factor. It’s called The Clinic! Damn cute one, they have their drinks served in IV packs and you suck it in, then syringes or test tubes which serve as shots. Then wheelchairs and hospital beds as chairs. And you have your drinks from an operating table.

Taken in Aug 2008.

The first time I met my soulmate – Medium Rare Steak. Oh god oh god. This was at Hog’s Breath and the steaks are so so so so so so so so so so so goooooooooooooooooood. I feel like crying thinking about it. Seriously, EAT YOUR BEEF THERE!!!

Taken in Aug 2008.

Max Brenner. Friends who came back from Melbourne raved about it, so I could only travel to as far as Singapore and thus tried it lah, see what’s so great.

The Suckao is great. Mmm. You melt chocolate pastilles in the aromatherapy thingie and then suck it with a spoon that is also a straw. Warm chocolate pastilles melted in milk.

Taken in May 2008.

Iguana at Clarke Quay!! The one with the huge huge Strawberry Marguerita! You actually feel full after drinking it (and obviously drunk). It’s only available at midnight or was it 11pm. Something like that. 🙂 Quite worth it.

One of Chee Kiang’s favourite hang out spots – mainly for the Satay Mondays! As you chill there on Monday nights, you’ll be served with free flow of Satays!

The concept is also a little like Luna Bar as it is situated on top of the Odeon Towers.

IMG_2409
At the bottom of the Odeon Towers, there are shallow water features where you can do things like that. 😛

There are plenty of cozy spots at the Loof too such as this mattress laden alcove.

I know I’m supposed to talk about touristy stuff, but it’s always awesome to do as the locals do. Do try the Nasi Briyani Mutton at the Prata Shop. Ask any NUS student and he’ll be like, “Ok come!” The mamak who opened the Prata Shop came out in the papers, something about making his first million or something. What’s the point of studying you tell me.

Durians at Geylang!! Hawker food in Singapore, sorry ah, as a whole generally suck. But Geylang is pretty decent (haha) if you’re going for some local fare (haha). No seriously, I’m talking about the food. Nothing touristy about prostitutes. Bloody D24 was like SGD30. I almost fainted.

IMG_6177 by you.
We had frog porridge there, some kind of noodles can’t remember what it was, tau fu fah and yau char kwai dip in soya bean.

Another place you should go if you want local food (according to my very shallow knowledge and the level of Chee Kiang’s willingness to bring me around), go to this place called Ginza. I *think* it’s in or near Clementi. CHICKEN RICE THERE BEST! Best best best best best. With taugeh that kind. Can fight with Ipoh!

Hola! International food is definitely at its best here in Singapore, but as for Hogs Breath and Cafe Cartel, these two outlets are fast becoming extinct! All the outlets are closing down, being replaced by McDonalds (eww). We should try the Chillis here as well, heard they serve pork =p

And the hot-air balloon also chap-lap already, go for the Flyer now WOOT.

jo: WHY IS HOG’S BREATH BECOMING EXTINCT?!?!? NOOOOoooo…

And I didn’t know about the Hot-air balloon. Oops. 😛
