What Do Hot Models and Blogging Have In Common?

Posted on July 14, 2007February 8, 2008 by Jolene

As much as I appreciate efforts to gather members of a community to come together with a similar goal in mind(in this case, to relate to one another), I just don’t see how blog gatherings should be associated with models.

Anyone heard of today’s Malaysian Blogger’s Day gathering?(I just found this out from Penny on MSN). With Adverlets.com backing up the event, all I can say is that “ah josh lim….I see.” and nod my head immediately understanding everything.

Before anyone shoots me by saying that I am being sour grapes because I’m not hot enough to be a car model or anything …pfft. I just don’t see the correlation between bloggers and car models. Why must there be pretty girls(who are on duty for their prettiness) at an event where the focus is forging a community(where we make more friends or spread propaganda or whatever if that’s your cup of tea). That’s the main purpose of having blog gatherings. To make friends.

So shoot me if I hold on to my beliefs that the usage of beautiful girls to make an event all the more enticing is down right degrading to women all over. I guess my opinions don’t really cover the fact that beautiful girls are used to make material possessions all the more enticing(cars+sexy women will always go hand in hand, like it or not.) because that’s just how things are. I grew up observing a media that has been doing just that. Beer and women, cars and women, gadgets and women.

How come I don’t see hot men posing next to cute cars to entice the women folk? Have you ever seen a delicious half naked man stripped down to his tight briefs sprawling all over the hood of a feminine car? No right!

How come there are no male models listed in this thing that they call Malaysian Blogger’s Day to appeal to the female bloggers?

Bloggers come together with a common purpose, to mingle and get to know the faces behind the blogs. The socio political bloggers come together to discuss and uphold their rights as bloggers with the so-called freedom of speech. Nowadays we have car models gracing events. What is this coming to? And how come today is Malaysian Blogger’s Day?

The definition of a Malaysian Blogger’s Day would be when everybody, every single blogger.. food bloggers, photographers who blog to showcase their creations, pink coloured lip gloss loving bimbo(in a good way) bloggers, diary bloggers, tech bloggers, car bloggers, parent bloggers, lifestyle bloggers, socio political bloggers and random blog reading enthusiasts…when these people come together, THAT’S a Malaysian Blogger’s Day.

But if models are gracing the event to add glamour to something that is far from being an object or of any material purposes and if the attendees are going there with the intentions of seeing beautiful girls, then this doesn’t serve the purpose of a Malaysian Blogger’s Day.
I’m not lambasting the organisers as I applaud their efforts in organizing a party I know from experience that it is not an easy thing to do. *wipes sweat* I do wish them all the best in organising the event today.

Just my two cents about dangling carrots for bunnies. Sorry. :X

    Hey, well said.

Hyundai is the first car manufacturer to remove female models from their motor show booths because they feel that the models are getting more attention than their cars.

And actually, during Proton Savvy launch, there were muscle guys promoting the car (showing that the car is strong or something like that).

Whatever it is, we still live in a prejudiced world and the women who happily take this tasks are also to blame. One of my classmates (girl) told me that she’d prefer to go and do the road show thing for five days and skip classes for the whole week, just because of the money and no matter how I rationalised with her, she still wanted the money they offered and to her she thinks its not degrading standing with 50 -60 year old ham sap men just clad in a skimpy outfit.

Sry off topic, we don’t need hot models as an attraction for any party, but sadly most organisers feel that this is the easiest way to attract people, especially the male crowd. Yet to see hot models for the female crowd though.

jo: good on Hyundai! if by any miraculous chance that my daughter gets some recessive genes and chooses to go do these events, i would smack her so hard.

lol. up to ur friend lah. want to skip school above all that. but i suppose when people are still young, they can do these things i suppose.

I just think it’s sexist lor.

Jayelle, I like my life to be beauty, blogs, brains, booze and bling. I’m relatively predictable, shallow at first glance, but ultimately, quite fun lah. And I didn’t want to do a party until we were abso-bloody-lutely sure we had a great lineup. Don’t you think we thought of that? Besides some of the bloggers you mentioned bloggers…we had:

… Hypertune models with blogs? 🙂 Our special guest HyperBabes, Leng Yein and Natalie are beauties who blog:

    http://lengyein85.blogs.friendster.com/leng_yein/
    http://budderflyx.blogspot.com/

…how about celebrities with blogs? Christien was there, with Lavin too!

    http://www.christienlavin.com/blog/

…how about magicians with blogs? David Lai did an excellent job!

    http://davidlaimag.blogs.friendster.com/

And for the benefit of our female counterparts, we had good looking male models too! Andrew Westwood was there (google him), as well as an Edward Norton lookalike called Manuel. Daniel Tan, my good friend, business partner and Best Male Model at KL Fashion Week 2005 would have been there – if he had not torn his knee ligament (danieltan2u.blogspot.com). We also had this cute white boy rockstar and Reverend (really one), Timothy of reverendtimothy.com. 🙂

No hard feelings. But if you were there, perhaps you’ll think differently. And I dare say you’ll have fun. You’re invited to our next one, btw. It’s going to be like, lots of drinking and no real agenda! I look forward to “What Do Alcohol And Blogging Have in Common” 🙂 Cheers!

jo: what’s with all the name droppings? need to prove something, again?

and correction: VERY shallow at first glance, ultimately, a jerk.

First of all, *!@$ advertlets and whatever form of capitalism on blogging.

As you well know, I’ve always been telling you how I hate this idea of advertising for bloggers, or how one company decides to play God and become an umbrella for bloggers. Standardization. Everyone having adverts. The reason I moved away from blogdrive (like you) was to get my own freedom.

People like KennySia and Xiaxue (sorry I don’t really know many popular bloggers, so I’ll just blatantly list the obvious king and queen of SE Asia blogosphere) will obviously benefit from things like this. But not us ‘smaller players’. Let me explain how:

Let’s say there’s this guy who’s a popular blogger called Lennon who gets…10k hits a day. Even this amount of hits might not be sufficient enough to
    get the advertiser’s attention.

But, combined with the ‘small time bloggers’ (which easily, if combined, make a larger sum of hits than the BS’s(blogging superstars)), THEN the advertisers get interested. So while the bs’s get probably a hundred or more (i don’t really know the (amount) we get…like…less than rm10(probably less) in what, 2 months? for whoring our pages with banners and stuff (some think it looks nice, but wtv fits their shoe).

Nuffnang, though I don’t really support it, is better that it brings the bloggers to see something like Pirates of the Carribean instead of parading models in front of them. It’s like the F1 racing track. I doubt half of the audience would be there if not for the models.

Nevertheless, this is what I warned you about. Blogging turning capitalism. 3-4 years back it wasn’t so popular, and I liked that. But now, as magazines and newspapers talk about blogging being all the rage, we’ve got paranoid governments hot on our heels, and money hungry businessmen putting ads on our blogs.

    This is just the beginning.

yeah, from your ever loving brother,

    Mervyn.

good luck with your exams che =)

jo: i suppose at one point i did feel annoyed with ads on blogs. but nuffnang made it in a way that it is not at all intrusive. well, and advertlets is not intrusive as well.. but that’s because it’s a clone lah. that’s why. bwahaha.

i moved away from blogdrive because i wanted my own dot com and the ability to password protect.:) it rocks man! But i don’t think any of the two companies are aiming to play god lah. You want to know who’s playing God? hahahahaha… you know i know the whole malaysian blogosphere knows.

I suppose it’s just an evolution of how blogging has come to be. business opportunities. some people might think ads are a trend, some do it to support their friends, some do it to see how far it will take them.. up to the individual i guess.

LOL. beginning eh. so what will it come to? ;D interesting..

🙂 from your ever loving and sick of studying sis. xoxoxoxo.

    Heyz Jolene,
I do agree with some of the points you’ve stated but from my understanding , I’m sure Josh/the organizers brought in the models as a form of attraction to attract more bloggers to attend the event . It’s a norm in every event to have an atttraction and the organizers picked the girls as one of them this time . As you know , some other events offfer lucky draws , celebrity appearance , games(with prizes for grabs) or free food . The Malaysia Blogger’s Day had `Hypertune Girls’ as one of them .

I was approached by Josh to perform there and couldn ‘t find a relation between magic and blogging( well, I do blog…) but did it to contribute to the entertainment of the event .

Some do like the idea of having girls there as `eye candy ‘ and some just want to socialize and have fun . I’m a bit of both ( but I had a curfew and had to call my gf by the hour).=) ….hope to cu soon .

    jo: hey there david!

a real community doesn’t need to have attractions like models and celebrities to come together to meet up. if they are there to entertain, they go on stage to sing/put on  a show, like what u did, then that’s cool. LOL. So this event offered Hypertune girls eh? ..haha. precisely my point.

so you see, these people are attracted to the event because of eye candies. totally defeating the purpose of a blog gathering. guys go there not to meet other bloggers but to salivate. it’s just a normal hyped up party-event then.

Of course the unprofessional one lah! Nicer ma, won’t kena grope also.

My dear Jolene, I work with Hypertune and those models who were there just to “be eye candies”…they were bloggers too. I in fact was the only organiser of the event and Hypertune was my only gift sponsors at the beginning until Advertlets wants in. I was in Hypertune Magazine myself and I am also a blogger, thus why I was there. I see your point in arguing your opinion. I guess this answers your question. The few “Hot Chicks” were:
    Natalie Fong Jean
    Leng Yein

jo: oh hello there:D I see.. right. Yeah, I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with bloggers who coincidentally work as models for a car magazine to organise a blog gathering. But the poster put it as hypertune models being one of the attractions at the gathering. Can’t blame me for taking it that way right? 🙂 Glad you all had a great time otherwise.

i just absolutely cannot believe the incredibly regressive, male chauvinist pig attitudes out there, especially emanating off josh lim, the self-righteous twat who so blatantly ripped off nuffnang’s ideas and has somehow fooled himself into thinking he’s ‘all that’ and can dance. for goodness’ sake.

but let’s not turn this into (too much of) a character attack, ok? because that’s not what i’m after. i’m just giving my two sen’s worth about what kind of person i think he is, after all the things i’ve heard and other manifest actions such as these.

in general though, it is sad that our society still condones the objectifying of women. women are more than objects for sexual gratification, or pretty, but unfortunately vapid ‘things’ to look at. in my opinion josh lim’s blog meet is an insult to all intelligent, capable women out there who happen to blog, and do it exceptionally well.

and his trying to justify male models, saying it’s for the female crowd? please. do not equate us with neanderthals who take one look at something butch and buff and want to shag it immediately. it is an insult to our intelligence by implying that by feasting our eyes on male models we are satiated and gratified.

it is childish and pardon me for saying, a pathetic attempt at gathering attention for what would otherwise be a plastic, synthetic event. i am appalled at his use of the term ‘malaysian bloggers’, because as you pointed out, jo, it’s not all about bloggers.

more than likely that kind of event will attract sleazeballs and narcissists; as opposed to people who really do give a damn about the outcome of our country, media freedom and freedom of expression, which, F.Y.I. josh lim, is the thing that really matters at the end of the day.

it’s precisely this narrow-minded, self-centered attitude that i simply cannot condone or comprehend, and i will not apologize for saying this but events like this, with models and ‘big blogging names’ (hoo-bloody-ha) as the main if not only attraction, are an insult to the blogging community as a whole.

josh lim, in the future should you organise any other event such as this, please do not sully the name of other bloggers out there who do not share your sentiments on what ‘real malaysian bloggers’ are. you might get sued for false advertising. and how dare you name-drop on my friend’s blog, lavishing your false niceties upon this site with your saccharine words.

for those of you who did go for the event, i am in no way putting you down or insulting you. i respect that it was your choice to go and participate, and good on you–perhaps to support a friend, or widen your social circle, or any other reason known only to you.

i just beseech others out there in the blogging community to in the future think twice about the implications of attending such events, because it does say a lot about your personality and values. just make sure you do it for the right reasons, and as long as you do, i have no beef with that.

amen. i need an inhaler now.

jo: :)One more time: I love you babe!! i have a few friends who attended the event. i’m sure those who went were just there to have fun. as all other normal human beings do. just that time and time again i’ve heard of stories about him and his ways, which is why i felt so sickened with the idea of baiting. but hey, i’m not anyone’s mother.

I didn’t read your inhaler part. Haha. I was telling Lie Yuen(while reading ur comment), “Melody would probably have run out of air by the time she was done,” haha and true enough.

First and foremost before everyone start shooting silver bullets at me. You have to think of what-ever-the-company’s-name as a business. And one thing for sure is girl do attract guys that is a fact nobody can deny and that goes for girls who will get attracted to guys.

It’s all in a marketing scheme to attract people. The more people you attract the chances are higher for you to make a deal. Usually the 10% rule applies; the 10% rule is out of the number of people that you meet 10% of the people you meet will close the deal. It’s like during the sales they would put up banner saying 70% off but you might only find one rack worth of items which are 70%.

So what I’m trying to say is that give the guy some slack. Maybe you see it as a degrading practice and immoral but I see it as a good marketing plan and kudos to him. I’m not saying girls are items to be paraded to attract guys, I’m totally against Miss World and all those crap. But it is the simplest and cheapest way to attract people that is why more adverts you see you girls.

    I hope I make sense.

    Just my dua sen.

jo: heya kok keith:) don’t worry, i’m glad you responded. and if i sound bitchy in my following comment, though i will refrain, there shouldn’t be any boh songness between u and me ok?

I agree that businesses must think of ways to market their products. but this is blog gatherings that we’re talking about. not mere products. clearly, the product will boost the business in terms of blogs and clients. but i’m assuming you don’t know half the things about him that have shaped my perspective of him(and when i think of him i think of the business). and the blatant declaration of using car models as an attraction sparked a plug.

I can’t repeat myself enough. If you want to appeal to Malaysian Bloggerss everywhere then appeal to ALL bloggers. By putting girls as an attraction, it’s such a turn off for other girls with opinions like mine.

i’m sure a good percentage of men won’t be appreciativee of what i have had to say about beautiful girls labelled as an attraction. The answer is so obvious. (as can be seen by a few comments here already.) And as much as I am against it, i also know it is a normal reaction.

but as a woman, this is my reaction to it.

And that’s my Rm4.50. Keep the change.

Lots of bloggers got the chance to meet up and get to know each other which is very good. Anyway since so many party are not happy with Adverlets claiming it without official mandate from the rest of the bloggers why don’t Adverlets try to make it official. I’m sure that will make everyone happy. 🙂 Cheers

jo: wah, why cannot type new comment for me must paste from lilian’s blog? 🙁

Yeah, Like i said, I have no problems if she took the initiative and efforts to organise it. what alot of us are not keen about is the sponsors that were taken in thus the ‘attractions’ and the declaration of the day as THE MALAYSIAN BLOGGERS DAY(nobody(either the organisers, the sponsors, the bloggers who voiced their discontentment) has the authority to declare the day as the ‘malaysian bloggers day’. It’s so obnoxious okay.) Though I did not harp on too much about that as my other comrades have taken it into their wings to wax lyrical about that. I’ll cover the dangling carrots for bunnies bit. Hi, 1st time here… I was there the so called “Malaysian Blogger Day” too, I was quite reluctant to go but since they invited me. I really wonder how dare they named it as Blogger Day? I was expecting someone will write this out and you did it… hahaha. Anyway, the event quite bored and it was more to like model show than blogger gathering. I left earlier as I don’t feel I’m welcome by the community.

jo: Oh hello!:) lol who wouldn’t react when they see such blatant reasons behind the attractions? and who wouldn’t react when they see people simply claiming a certain day of the year as something without consulting with the entire community? no one is higher than the rest okay. Didn’t feel welcomed? I thought I saw you looking pretty happy in photos.. but oh well. i guess that’s the case when superficialism is tangible in the air.

personal view – why pretty girls front such adverts or car shows, it draw ladies too as ladies wanted to see how can such girls are so damn pretty and they want to go see what made them so beautiful…..as for guys, u know la….see see only and imagine things….hehe

jo: personal view – car shows are car shows. girls only go there to see which car they should buy(or maybe they are interested in cars.) we girls don’t mind checking out girls every now and then but BELIEVE ME, I am con-fucking-firmly sure that A VERY LARGE PERCENTAGE OF GIRLS don’t go to stupid events(any event okay, I’m not pointing fingers) to see “how can such girls are so damn pretty and want to go see what made them so beautiful”. We are not that pathetic lah. We don’t need to go there and take notes. We have beauty magazines for that.

and you guys go do what you want lah. One thing that is good about these displays of flesh is that the men can satiate themselves visually rather than being oppressed and end up raping their own daughters and grandmothers like so many of the oppressed men in our country. Curiosity killed the cat.

“The definition of a Malaysian Blogger’s Day would be when everybody, every single blogger.. food bloggers, photographers who blog to showcase their creations, pink coloured lip gloss loving bimbo(in a good way) bloggers, diary bloggers, tech bloggers, car bloggers, parent bloggers, lifestyle bloggers, socio political bloggers and random blog reading enthusiasts…when these people come together, THAT’S a Malaysian Blogger’s Day.”

I agree with you. Its really weird when some blogger stand up and announced their gathering is Malaysian Bloggers Day.

jo: yah, like big boss like that!

thumbs up jolene! salute and bow. people who called themselves as blogger should be the ones who are artistic on their own sense — to define their feelings, sentiments, wishes and desires. Like what you said, evolution. Blogging should be the contemporary term of creative writing and thoughts. And now, it looks as a market, commercial purposes and even celebrities? It looks bad. For sure, no doubt, i love hot chicks but in term of blogger’s day + hot chicks = ???. I don’t see any connection and it does not serve any purpose. Mind everyone, it’s blogger’s day not a fashion show or models. It’s a disgrace. Well done. Well written.

    Regards,
    Ken

jo: 🙂 i hope it will remain true to its nature. yeah… it’s like turning something so great and real into something so typical and superficial.

    Hmmmm.

Maybe I should start posting photos of bare naked almost porn-ish naked Malaysian girls (instead of nudes) and call it ‘photography’

    Guaranteed to double my hits.

kau tak paham what am I ranting here?

Take a random blog and put up a photo of a girl with low cut top that reveals the lurah of her handful breasts, and you have an instant hit.

Go to any car show and you’ll see more ‘photographers’ taking photos of the girls than the cars then balik rumah pergi melancap with the photos of the girls.

I am not surprised why sex sells so well in this world, because there are a lot of wankers around, especially in the online community.

And I salute Jolene and the others for bringing this up, at least they live in reality.

jo: REALITY. that’s the word!! yes. fantasies and such are perfectly fine.. but just don’t mix it with other things to spoil it for others.
